What is a Discount?

The word "discount" can be used to describe a variety of price reductions on products and services. The two most popular forms of discounts are percentage off and fixed amount off discounts.

A percentage off of a price often refers to receiving a discount of a certain amount, such as 10% off the item's original cost. For instance, if a product costs $65 and is eligible for a 10% discount, the ultimate price would be determined by deducting $65 from $65 by 10% or calculating 90% of $45:

10% of $65 = 0.10 × 65 = $6.50

$65 – $6.50 = $58.50

or

90% of $65 = 0.90 × 65 = $58.50

In this case, your savings amount is $6.50, or 10%.

In contrast, taking a fixed amount from a price means deducting the fixed amount from the starting price. For instance, if a service is regularly $160 and you have a coupon for $40 off, you would subtract $40 from $160 to determine the final cost.

$160 - $40 = $100

In this case, you are saving a fixed price of $40.
