What is VTT?

A text file stored in the Web Video Text Tracks (WebVTT) format is known as a VTT file. It includes details about an online video, such as chapters, subtitles, captions, and metadata. Video data is not included in VTT files.

Most online video hosting platforms, including YouTube and Vimeo, and media players like VideoLAN and VLC Media Player, allow users to caption or subtitle their videos using VTT files. The WebVTT format is further intended to offer:

  • Chapters for content navigation.
  • Text descriptions for videos.
  • Additional information that is related to audio or video content

Note: In 2010, WebSubtitle Resource Tracks (WebSRT) was replaced by WebVTT.

What is SRT?

A subtitles file stored in the SubRip file format is known as an SRT file. It has time information and subtitle text. SRT files can be used to display subtitles in a variety of media players.

SRT files include timing data and subtitle text written as follows:

1
00:00:03,400 → 00:00:06,177
In this lesson, we're going to
be talking about business. And

2
00:00:06,177 → 00:00:10,009
one of the most important aspects
of business interests.

An SRT file is loaded segment by segment by a media player, and each segment's text is shown at the time period with which it is linked. The timecodes in SRT files are encoded in the HH:MM:SS,MIL format. As a result, the first line of text in the example above would appear on the screen at 3.004 and vanish at 6.00177 seconds.
